Waiting on Wednesday (6)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Lauren Kate

There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story. (from Amazon)

When I saw the cover, I fell in love with this book and when I read the blurb.. well, needless to say, I MUST READ IT. Ahem.

Hello, my pretty.

But soon Dory realizes someone is killing vampire Senate members, and if she can’t stop the murderer, her friends may be next…(from Goodreads)

This is the second in Ms. Karen's Dorina Basarab series and hello! The first book (Midnight's Daughter) was awesome so I can't wait for this one. Comes out January 5, 2010!

Review: Silen Night, Haunted Night by Terri Garey

Silent Night, Haunted Night (Nicki Styx, book 4)
Terri Garey
Avon

October 27, 2009

ISBN-10: 0061582042

All I haunt for Christmas is you . . .

Joe Bascombe is no stranger to desire, but when a sexy spirit begins haunting his dreams, he finds himself ensnared by dark passions. What he doesn't realize is that the devious demon and her two sisters, otherwise known as the Three Fates, are out to teach the woman he loves a lesson . . .

Unwilling psychic Nicki Styx survived a near-death experience to find herself able to see and hear the dead, but she only has eyes for Joe. Together they've conquered evil spirits, saved lost souls, and beaten back the Devil himself, but they're about to learn that there are more things in Heaven and Hell than they ever imagined. As far as Nicki is concerned, Joe is the man of her dreams, but now they're at the mercy of the creature who's invaded his.

It'll be a Christmas to remember . . . and it could be Joe and Nicki's last.

Ever since Nicki Styx died then came back to life, she can see and talk to ghosts. Unfortunately, it hasn't made her life any easier. If anything, the restless ghosts that show up need help with whatever it is that's still keeping them around and Nicki's just lucky - or unlucky - enough to be the one who can help them and they just don't take no for an answer. After a year of getting used to having them around and a new boyfriend, Nicki's pretty happy and used to things. Until one night, three spirits show up. That is, three bodiless heads floating in the air wake her up at 3 in the morning while she's paralyzed with terror. What a way to welcome the Holidays.

These spirits out for revenge and one of them, a beautiful woman who apparently can seduce any man just by visiting his dreams, got her sights on Joe, Nicki's boyfriend. But Nicki's not about to give him up without a fight. And to make matters even more jolly - the Devil's back.

Silent Night, Haunted Night is the fourth book in the Nicki Styx series and one of the best, in my opinion. The plot kept me going until the very end wanting to know who these spirits that had it in for Nicki were and why they did. It's a very original twist on the lore and I really enjoyed it. However, I reached a point in which I really disliked Joe, I just couldn't stand him. I wanted Nicki to just dump him and move on, but she loves him and wasn't going to give him up so I have to give her props for that. I wanted her to give Sammy a chance, which is just crazy considering he's literally the Devil but he's so cute that I couldn't help it! I really liked the story, Silent Night, Haunted Night is a fun ghostly ride with great characters and a fun, devilish plot!

Waiting On Wednesday (4)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Tempest Rising (Jane True, #1)
Nicole Peeler
Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie's lamp.

If you love Sookie Stackhouse, then you'll want to dive into Nicole Peeler's enchanting debut novel.

Well! I do happen to love Sookie's book so hello! I'm trying this new author out come November 1st. What do you guys think about the cover? It's cute yet a little odd. I'm so not feeling the snakes!

Review: Skinned by Robin Wasserman

Skinned
Robin Wasserman
Simon Pulse
August 4, 2009
ISBN-10: 1416974490

Some miracles come with a price . . .

Lia Kahn was perfect: rich, beautiful, popular. Until the accident that nearly killed her.

Now she has been downloaded into a new body that only looks human. Lia will never feel pain again, she will never age, and she can't ever truly die.

The first in a new trilogy.

This is one of those rare books where I love/hate the story. First of all, Lia is dead. She died in a car crash. However, her brain has been downloaded into a completely new body. She essentially cheated death and I'm one of mind that I detest knowing my mortality, and so when she started her pity party, I reached a point where I just wanted to bitchlap her and tell her that for god's sake, she should be, at least relieved, that she's still in a way, alive! Yes, things are different and they will never be the same and I understand that her previous life was perfect so that makes things harder but I can only take so much boohoowoeisme before I snap.

(This is started to sound suspiciously like a rant)

Anyway! While she certainly annoyed me at times, I loved her. I loved how she was so stubborn about keeping things the same, how she was so determined to be human. The other characters - Walker, the boyfriend, Zo, her sister, her friends Bliss and Tess, at first I didn't care much about. Let's admit it, it's all about Lia. But then as the story progress I went from indifference to full-on dislike because - and I can't say too much without spoiling the book for you - they were being so self-absorbed and some just plain bitchy. I do admit that my feelings toward to Zo changed a bit when I read about what was happening with her. Sure, she was still kind of a bitch but I felt bad for her. But there were a few others that I genuinely liked, like Auden and Jude, although I was on the fence with Jude, because well, is he a tortured character or just a psycho?

However, I certainly enjoyed the story. Ms. Wasserman has created a completely original world with captivating, so human-like (which is exceptionally funny that the most human of them all is a machine) characters that you can't help but feel for, no matter how much you don't want to care about them, believe me! Skinned is the first in a trilogy and Crashed, the second book, came out September 8th. I will certainly try to get paws on Crashed because I must know what happens next!

P.S: I was just reading my reading updates on Skinned and um, someone should have told me I sounded like a raving lunatic.

Review: The Hollow by Jessica Verday

The Hollow
Jessica Verday
Simon Pulse
September 1, 2009
ISBN-10: 1416978933

When Abbey's best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead?and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen's funeral, and keeps reappearing in Abbey's life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he's the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.
From the beginning, the reader sees Abbey go through her grief for her lost best friend and the emotion just comes off the page. It's heartbreaking to read how horribly sad she is and how she has to come to terms with not seeing Kristen ever again. When Caspian came into the picture, I was so happy for Abbey. She needs something or someone to help get her through her grief and Caspian does just that. He's a lovely character that I wished I could have read more about but the story is told in Abbey's POV and as such, we see what happens through her eyes. Abbey and Caspian's relationship has that new love sort of feel to it that left me giddy and I just couldn't tear away from the story.

I honestly wasn't happy with the twist at the end. Maybe it's the hopeless romantic in me but - damn, I can't say much without giving away the complete plot! - I just think that the way things went leave little choices for future books (nice and vague!). It's clear The Hollow is the first in a series considering there's a cliffhanger at the end.

All-in-all, The Hollow is a perfect book for a cold winter night to snuggle with. It's a lovely story that I really did like. The characters are nicely developed, and the setting is beautiful. Something Verday is very good at is setting and details which makes for a very good read. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book because I'm very curious about what will happen with these characters next.

P.S.: I said it before and will say it again: The UK cover is a way lovelier than the US one! I just love the purple/gray combination, it's so simple but so lovely. Seriously, I love that cover. It would make a great poster for my room!

In My Mailbox (4)

Alright. As we all know, IMM is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren! It's when you post about the books you received in the week - brought/won/checked out, etc.

This week I received:

The Hollow by Jessica Verday

When Abbey's best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead?and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he's the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

Which I've already started reading. Unfortunately I haven't been able to read much as I've worked the past 3 nights (I'm at work right now! But let's keep that to ourselves, heh). I really like the US cover but the UK one is so lovely! Lookit:

Anyway - I also received Night's Cold Kiss by Tracey O'Hara.

For centuries war raged between the humans and Aeternus vampires—until courageous efforts on both sides forged a fragile peace

But the rogue Necrodreniacs will never be controlled—addicted as they are to the death-high . . . and bloody chaos.

Since witnessing the murder of her mother, Antoinette Petrescu has burned with fiery hatred for the vampire race—even for Christian Laroque, the noble, dangerously handsome Aeternus who rescued her. Now an elite Venator, Antoinette must reluctantly accept Christian's help to achieve her vengeance—even as he plots to use the beautiful, unsuspecting warrior as bait to draw out the bloodthirsty dreniacs.

Definitely sounds good and I'll probably read it after The Hollow. So, that's all for these week!

Review: Barely Bewitched by Kimberly Frost

Barely Bewitched
Kimberly Frost
Penguin Group
September 1, 2009
ISBN-10: 0425229610

Welcome to Duvall, Texas, where new witch Tammy Jo Trask has just unleashed an accidental Armageddon...Oops.

Tammy Jo's misfiring magic has attracted the unwanted attention of WAM, the World Association of Magic. Now, a wand-wielding wizard and a menacing fire warlock have come to Duvall to train her for a dangerous mandatory challenge. But is there more to their arrival than they claim?

When a curse leads to a toxic spill of pixie dust, the town comes unglued and the doors between the human and faery worlds begin to open. To rescue the town and to face the impossible magical test, Tammy needs the help of incredibly handsome Bryn Lyons, but WAM has declared him totally off-limits. To avoid deadly consequences, Tammy probably ought to follow the rules this time.

On the other hand, rebellion is an old Texas tradition

Brand-new witch Tammy Jo has unfortunately attracted the attention of WAM, or the World Association of Magic. They're demanding that she has to be pass a test before she can actually practice magic. The funny thing is, Tammy Jo is not really interested in practicing magic to begin with, she's happy being a pastry chef. Much to her dismay, the people at WAM are not giving her a choice - she has to pass her test or she risks being, well, terminated, if you know what I mean. The Association has sent a wand-wielding wizard named Jordan and a psycho fire warlock named Incendio to train her and get her ready for the test she has to pass. Or so they say.

Tammy Jo's being told by WAM to stay away from Bryn Lyons, a mage she's incredibly attracted to, although she's still on and off with her ex-husband, Zach. Staying away from Bryn proves more difficult than anything when she accidentally unleashes a curse on the town, which leads to a toxic spill of pixie dust. Next thing you know, there's naked people dancing around being mischievous and Tammy has to find a way to get the town back to normal. But she can't do so alone and she needs Bryn to help her. So between WAM trying to rule her life, her town going nuts and trying not to jump Bryn's sexy bones, Tammy Jo's got her hands full!

Barely Bewitched is the second installment in Frost's Southern Witch Novels. It's a very funny book and easy read! From beginning to end, Tammy Jo's adventures kept me on my toes and wondering what was going to happen next. It was hilarious how when she tried to make it better, she ended up making worse! Considering this is the second book in the series, I was a little wary that I would be a bit lost since I haven't read the first book, Would-Be Witch, but I'm glad to report that wasn't the case at all. There's definitely enough back-story for the reader to understand what's going on and why. I thought Barely Bewitched to be a very entertaining story and I'm definitely reading the next Tammy Jo book!

Waiting On Wednesday (4)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, I'm featuring Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough.

Tamsin Greene comes from a long line of witches, and she was supposed to be one of the most Talented among them. But Tamsin's magic never showed up. Now seventeen, Tamsin attends boarding school in Manhattan, far from her family. But when a handsome young professor mistakes her for her very Talented sister, Tamsin agrees to find a lost family heirloom for him. The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all. This is a spellbinding display of storytelling that will exhilarate, enthrall, and thoroughly enchant.

Sounds really good, doesn't it! It comes out September 14, 2009.

Review: Finding the Lost by Shannon K. Butcher

Finding the Lost (The Sentinel Wars, book 2)
Shannon K. Butcher
Onyx
November 3, 2009
ISBN-10: 0451412826

They are the Sentinels: three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind, each possessing unique abilities in their battle to protect humanity against their eternal foes--the Synestryn. Now a young woman must put faith in a warrior whose power frightens her even as it draws her in.

Andra Madison knows that monsters are real. She's been fighting them ever since her family was victimized by the Synestryn eight years ago. Now she's devoted to finding children who've been abducted by the Synestryn. When she gets a call about a lost little boy, she tracks him to a warehouse on the outskirts of town, where she's aided by a trio of human men...or so she thinks.

Paul has been searching for centuries for a woman like Andra. To find her, he strikes a bargain with a bloodhunter that could cost him his life. Now his desire for Andra threatens to destroy his much-needed control. Against her wishes, Andra agrees to join Paul on a journey fraught with danger--one that leads directly to the Synestryn.

Andra Madison has been fighting monsters since she was little. Eight years ago, they murdered her family. Now she specializes in finding children who have been kidnapped by the same monsters that kidnapped her youngest sister and murdered her mom that horrible night. These monsters are called the called the Synestryn. When she gets a call about a little boy who has been taken, she has no option but to say yes to trying to find him. She tracks him down to a warehouse. But before she can rescue him, she has to fight the Synestryn that are holding him there.

Paul is running out of time. He's been looking for centuries for the woman who would save his life and his life tree is barely hanging on by a few leaves. He desperately strikes a bargain with Logan, a vampire, who's supposed to be able to find special women who could possibly end up being able to save his life and because of this, they end up finding Andra just as she's about to fight the Synestryn. When Paul first sees her, he knows she's special and he's willing to do anything to make sure that she's compatible with him and sets out to persuade her to spend the rest of eternity with him. Andra agrees to join Paul in fighting the Synestryn but what she doesn't know, but will found out soon, is that Paul is looking for the woman who will save his soul.

Finding the Lost is the second installment in The Sentinel Wars series by Shannon K. Butcher and a very entertaining read! Paul and Andra have an explosive chemistry together that just comes off the page. While I certainly liked the main characters, I felt that Nika and Madoc absolutely stole the story for me. Nika is Andra's sister and she has been suffering in a mental institution for eight years after being attacked by the Synestryn. Andra is willing to do anything, including traveling with strangers to find someone who supposedly might be able to help Nika. Madoc's a Sentinel warrior and he's holding a grave, dark secret from his brothers. He's full of anger and just plain pissed off and I really, really hope he gets his own book because I really want to read more about him, same with Nika. The ending was a great cliff hanger and I can't wait to read the next book in this series! I really enjoyed reading Finding the Lost, it's a fast-paced story with great action scenes and lots of hot romance.

Zombie Appreciation Week! Land vs. Dawn

Let's take a little break from book-related awesomeness to some film-related awesomeness! This is for the Zombie Week going on right now - from August 29 to September 6th! - and it made me start thinking about if I had to fight zombies, which one would I choose - Land of the Dead's or Dawn's of the Dead's? (for the sake of it, I just went with these 2)

And because I'm a list-making freak, I've list the pros and cons of Land zombies or a Dawn zombies.

Land pros & cons:

1. They are actually thinking (somewhat) and that could only end in disaster.
2. They are slow, which is good!
3. They've learned how to use guns, kind of.
4. They have Big Daddy.
5. I have Dead Reckoning on my hands.

Cute.

Dawn
pros & cons

1. They are freakishly fast f-ers!
2. They don't think at all. They just want braiinnsss. And some legs. Arms, too. No fingers, though. Too rubbery.
3. Because they're not big on thinking, they could easily be trapped and killed.
4. They don't have Big Daddy.
5. What the hell am I going to do with a boat??

Running zombies!

After much consideration, I think I would choose Land's. Sure, they're kinda smart but they're slow and I could totally outwit them, although I'm not so sure I could outrun them!

What do you think?

Don't forget to check out the Zombie Week, there's book, movies, comics, etc and they're all about zombies!

P.S: Take the Zombie Bite Calculator and see how long it would take you to turn into a zombie!

It would take me only 1 hour and 8 minutes to become infected! That's just sad.

The Dark Divine
Bree Despain
December 22, 2009

A prodigal son

A dangerous love

A deadly secret . . .

I stood back and watched his movements. Daniel had that way about him that could shut me down in an instant. . . . I kicked the gravel a couple of times and worked up my courage again. “Tell me . . . I mean . . . why did you come back? Why now, after all this time?”

Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared—the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in blood. But she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night really held. And when Daniel returns three years later, Grace can no longer deny her attraction to him, despite promising Jude she’ll stay away.

As Grace gets closer to Daniel, her actions stir the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind Jude and Daniel's dark secret . . . and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it—her soul.

I want this book so bad! I just love the cover and it sounds so good. And I have to wait until December? SHAME.

He can Chapter-32 me anytime!
